Minted from 1892 to 1915, the Barber dime was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber to replace the aging Seated Liberty design. Featuring a classical Liberty head obverse and a heraldic eagle reverse, the 90% silver coin was designed to be a durable workhorse of commerce, though it faced mixed public reception for its conservative, classical style.

The Barber design was supposed to be ready for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1892 but there was contention among artists at the time. As a result, the US Mint's Chief Engraver (Barber) simply created the design himself.

The front (obverse) of the coin features Liberty facing right, wearing a cap, laurel wreath, and a headband inscribed with "LIBERTY". The back (reverse) of the coin portrays a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and arrows.
