Abraham Lincoln was one of America's greatest leaders. He led a fractured country through what was undoubtedly one of the darkest times of the country's history, the Civil War, Additionally, he held a firm belief that all men were created equal, and was instrumental in abolishing slavery in the country as well. As he was such an important figure in American history, Congress decided to honor the bicentennial of his birth with a special silver dollar commemorative issue. The obverse features a stunning portrait of the President, and the reverse contains the final 43 words of his famous Gettysburg Address. The coins were issued in proof and mint state finishes, and surcharges were added to support the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
