United States half dollars are the largest pre-1965 coins that were made out of .715 Troy ounces per $1 in face value. The larger coins (silver dollars) were constructed of a larger per-value size making them 0.77 Troy ounces.

Of those half dollar coins, the Kennedy 1964 is the most economical way to build your stack. This coin is a favorite among silver stackers for its larger dimensions and its relative abundance compared to Barber, Walking Liberty and Franklin half dollars.

Keep in mind when buying Kennedy half dollars that only the 1964 was constructed of 90% silver. The 1965 to 1969 versions (and various other commemorative versions) were only 40%. Additionally, all US half dollars from 1970 onward in main circulation contain no silver at all.
